Terry Ledford, LPC
Human beings are complex - everyone is different and may require a different approach. Because of this, I am an eclectic counselor. What does this mean to you? I apply one, or parts of multiple theories to my patients. Some of these theories are: Cognitive Behavior Theory which focuses on how a client’s thoughts impact words, actions, and ultimately results. Psychoanalytic Theory which roots out causes that help us reconcile behaviors and Feminist Theory for those that have been marginalized by their gender, sexuality, skin color, or culture.
You may have already picked up on an educational component incorporated throughout my practice. There are more theories that I use, but we can chat more about those as they come up naturally within our sessions.
I am an engaged, personable counselor who provides a listening ear, observes, supports, and empathizes with you for the courage you have taken to begin your counseling journey. I was on the other side of the coffee table as a client for many years navigating several life milestones prior to becoming a counselor. For much of my time as a counseling patient, I used weekly therapy sessions as maintenance to process my previous week rather than leaning solely on my relationships. I found that doing this enabled me to better enjoy my time with family and friends in a healthier way.
Together, we will help identify and articulate your feelings - moving past bad and sad to feeling words like anxious, frustrated, or numb. Did you know identifying feeling words which resonate with you can actually provide comfort and healing within itself? As appropriate, I will use self-disclosure as this is an intervention that can provide support and healing for my patients. Vulnerability is key to unlocking greater intimacy within relationships. I model my own vulnerability in order to create a connection with you and to help you identify how this practice will benefit you personally.
I will help you learn new skills based on your goals where you can make practical application for everyday life. In sessions, we will identify untrue narratives and replace them with accurate statements that you can carry forward. We will explore self-care strategies that you will incorporate into your daily routine. Your personal evolution will include boundaries that will equip you for all that life throws at you. We’ll explore what can be added to your life to achieve your goals. I will help provide you with a sense of agency and work towards a self-actualized life. In a nutshell, feeling in control over your actions and feeling fulfilled and doing all you are capable of.
What else can you expect from me? I will be your advocate, providing a safe and non-judgmental space for you with the intention to allow for anything to be shared in a comfortable and confidential environment. I’m an especially good fit for those within the LGBTQ+ community, those struggling with anxiety, depression, panic disorder or trauma.
Another goal of mine is to facilitate a process that gets you to the life you envision. If your life isn’t envisioned quite yet, that’s ok - we can work on that too. You already have many of the answers. We may just need to do some sorting, organization, and exploration to uncover them. With all of that said, I don’t have all of the answers, but I’ll share all the tools in my toolbox to help us lead you to them. Consider me as your personal wellness co-pilot.
