Team Spotlight: Meet Matthew Lieser, LCPC

What attracted you to Wellman Psychology & Associates?

I was really passionate about starting my own practice. Through friends, I met Dr. Wellman and I learned that we both had similar interests and ambitions to start and grow a practice. I have been working here for about two years now, and I can say that I have really enjoyed the opportunities and experiences I have gained here.

Education

For my undergrad, I went to Xavier University studying International Business. For graduate school, I went to Loyola University Chicago studying Philosophy and Pastoral Counseling.

Family Life

I grew up in Ohio, in the suburbs of Toledo. I was the second oldest of four, with two brothers and one sister.

Where have you lived?

I have lived in Ohio, Chicago, DC, Ecuador, Spain, Peru, and Guatemala. From my travels, I learned to speak Spanish fluently.

Experience

In college, I held a lobbying internship in DC, and I studied abroad in Spain for a summer. After college, I joined the Peace Corps and moved to Guatemala where I held various roles in the community including: business development, school teaching, and exporting farm goods. When I returned to the States, I worked as a supply chain analyst for a few years. When I realized that was not my passion, I returned to school at Loyola University Chicago, and I joined the Jesuits in social service missions to Ecuador and Peru. I think all these experiences, and there different qualities, helped me to uncover my true passion for counseling.

What inspired you to become a therapist?

Generally, my inspiration for becoming a therapist stems from my desire to understand and connect with people. My missionary work led me to engage with various populations, such as children, farmers, jail mates and even the elderly. Additionally, learning from the Jesuits developed a passion to help others become their best selves. On a personal level, the most critical factor in my decision to pursue counseling was seeing how much I grew personally working with a therapist of my own. That experience inspired me to want to help others grow like I did.

Hobbies

I love to run, play soccer, and spend time reading and researching. On the weekends, I enjoy exploring new neighborhoods in Chicago. My favorite neighborhood so far is Pilsen because of the cafes, restaurants, and art galleries.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?

For all my worldly adventures and traveling, I am actually a ‘homebody’ in a weird way.  I like to visit my family at home every couple of months. I love adventure, but I also like to be at home.

Favorite TV Show

30 Rock. I love Tina Fey. I have seen every episode!

A line of inspiration to live by…

I have two quotes that I live and practice by. I learned them both in high school.

(1) “Gently yet firmly”

(2)”Be who you are and be it well” – Saint Francis de Sales
