What anxiety might look and feel like right now in isolation

The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be very stressful for you or for those you live with and/or know. Everyone reacts a bit different to stressful situations. The uncertainty surrounding coronavirus is hard to handle, as none of us know how exactly how we’ll be impacted or how bad things might get.

Recognizing the intensity and suddenness of COVID-19, it’s important to monitor both yourself and loved ones, as fear and anxiety about a disease can be overwhelming and cause strong emotions in adults and children.

Stress during an infectious disease outbreak, like COVID-19, may cause sudden fluctuations in mood, focus, productivity and behavior.

Signs to be aware of include:

  • Excessive fear and worry about your own health and the health of your loved ones

  • Excessive crying or emotional outbursts

  • Changes in sleep or eating patterns that significantly impact functioning

  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating that significantly impact functioning

  • Sudden worsening of chronic health problems

  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs

  • Avoidance of activities enjoyed in the past

  • Irritability and “acting out” behaviors

Individuals who may respond more strongly to the stress of this crisis may include:

  • Older individuals who are at higher risk for COVID-19

  • People with chronic diseases who are at higher risk for COVID-19

  • Children and teens without school or a routine

  • People who are helping with the response to COVID-19, like doctors and other health care providers, or first responders

  • People who have pre-existing mental health conditions including problems with substance use

It is a critically important time to stay aware. If you notice these signs in yourself or loved ones, or if you live or care for individuals who might be at a greater risk, please be vigilant and seek help or guidance immediately at first sign or symptom.
